American Pit brings you a look into Rock band, Variants. Check out their latest EP, "Commonwealth" out now!
Could you tell us how each of you met? and in turn how the band formed?
We have all been involved in the local New Orleans scene formerly centered around The Cypress/High Ground venue since we were kids, and have been in various projects. We ended up meeting each other and found that we had similar musical interests, and started playing music together.
How would you describe your sound?
We usually describe ourselves as "melodic rock." Our influences are very diverse, so it's hard to pinpoint our sound, but we feel that's a fairly accurate description.
Your latest EP “Commonwealth” just dropped on October 23. What was the experience like for writing “Commonwealth”? Did a specific moment in one of your lives inspire any songs? Tell us about it.
The writing process was very much a learning experience. We've gone through a couple of member changes, and have had to adjust some of our writing techniques, but we've found some methods that work well for us. As far as inspiration is concerned, Lance writes most of his lyrics about events and relationships that he has personally experienced.
Who inspired each of you to start making music?
Some of our influences include Foo Fighters, Third Eye Blind, John Mayer, Blink 182, Sum 41...the list goes on.
There’s so many great places to play across this country, what’s your favorite town to play in and why?
We really like the northeast, particularly Allentown, PA. Every time we've played there the crowd has been great. We'll be playing a few L.A. shows soon and we're super excited for that too!
Any bad habits you guys develop on tour? (Now’s your time to rag on each other)
Thankfully we all get along pretty well on the road, and know how to work with each other live together. I'd say the biggest bad habit we have is misplacing/losing things. I know that I've lost a belt on every tour haha
Who is your celebrity crush?
Scarlett Johansen (fire emoji)
What is the craziest experience you’ve had with a fan?
One of the craziest experiences we've had happened in South Carolina, I think. This happened to Lance so I'm not 100% sure of all the details. Lance has a stutter when he speaks. It doesn't happen when he sings so no, it's not an issue. But there is a mechanical device, similar to a hearing aid, that can help reduce the severity of one's stutter. This device is worth a pretty penny. Lance befriended a fan at a show, and he later (without our knowledge) sent Lance an "extra" device for him to have. We were all speechless when we found that out. True generosity.
Best experience you’ve had since being apart of this band? (Whether it be a show, a song writing session, a tour, anything?)
Playing to a crowd of hundreds at the House of Blues New Orleans on the mainstays was pretty surreal. Also, hearing us on the radio at home was a cool experience.
Before we wrap up, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
Our new "Commonwealth" EP is out now on iTunes, bandcamp, Spotify etc. We hope you can check it out!
